Better Napping Age By Age

Grumpiness, laziness, illness may be a sign that your baby is not taking better nap. Many parents don’t know how much sleep does a baby need, How many naps should their child take and for how much hours their child should sleep in night. Every child have different period of time of napping age by age. Here I am sharing total time period of sleep and nap your child should take according to his/ her age as well as giving you some tips of better napping for your child.

1-New born to Two months:

Their total requirement of sleep is 16-18 hours in which 8-9 hours night time sleep and 7-9 hours nap (in which total number of naps should be 3-5)

  • For their better napping and sleep you should make them wake after 2 to 4 hour of interval to give them feed as new born sleep well when their tummy are full.

  • As new born don’t know how to sooth themselves for better sleep. So, you should help them with different tricks like using a soother/ pacifier, breastfeeding, swaddling and rocking.

  • On and off check your child’s pamper and change it if it is full of pee or poop. Turn them during sleep to sooths them more.

2-Two to Four months:

Their total requirement of sleep is 14-16 hours in which 9-10 hours night time sleep and 4-5 hours nap (in which total number of naps should be 3)

  • To make good sleeping routine at this age; play with your child and expose a lot of sunlight in day time.

  • Give your baby a bath and tummy full feed before sleep. This can help your baby to take longer stretches of sleep throughout the night.

3-Four to Six months:

Their total requirement of sleep is 14-15 hours in which 10 hours night time sleep and 4-5 hours nap (in which total number of naps should be 2-3)

  • Usually at this age babies quit their night time feeding and sleep whole night. But it is not necessary as some babies do so when they reach to month of nine. You may sing lovely lullaby along with light pat to make your baby sleep for long time in night.

4-Six to Nine months:

Their total requirement of sleep is 14 hours in which 10-11 hours night time sleep and 3-4 hours nap (in which total number of naps should be 2)

5-Nine to Twelve months:

Their total requirement of sleep is 14 hours in which 10-12 hours night time sleep and 2-3 hours nap (in which total number of naps should be 2)

  • For six to twelve month of age as baby starts to crawl, night time massage and soothing lullaby help them to sleep properly.

6-Twelve to Eighteen months:

Their total requirement of sleep is 13-14 hours in which 11-12 hours night time sleep and 2-3 hours nap (in which total number of naps should be 1-2)

7-Eighteen months to Two years:

Their total requirement of sleep is 13-14 hours in which 11 hours night time sleep and 2 hours nap.

8-Two to Three years Five years:

Their total requirement of sleep is 11-13 hours in which 10-11 hours night times sleep and 1 hour nap. Usually naps stop by age of five but if you feel your child need a nap after coming from school. He/ she should take for an hour and half.

  • At age of one to three year as your baby can walk, run and plays well so proper full dinner, bed time bath and back rubbing will surely make them sleep in better way.

9-Five to Twelve years:

Their total requirement of sleep is 10-11 hours and at this age naps are not necessary.

  • From three to twelve year; busy social schedule, schooling, homework, physical games, TV time make them to sleep well in night.
