2018 is a milestone year for Mélange, as it marks the momentous 25-year journey of the high-end fashion outpost situated in the heart of Mumbai.
Commemorating over two decades of landmarks and accomplishments into one capsule celebration, founder Sangita Kathiwada has attempted to curate a unique exhibit that serves as a time capsule, journeying back to the birth of the fashion house in the early ‘90s.
Thecelebratory exhibit at Mélange has been christened ‘Past Continuous’ and explores the idea of present-day fashion by juxtaposing it with stories from the past. Ms. Kathiwada has brought together memories of all the designers and patrons that have been closely associated with the brand over the years and have helped create a dialogue for the new generations to be made aware of. She has completely transformed the space to make it look like a gallery where guests can walk through the timeline of the brand with archival material; photographs and old garments stocked at Mélange and peruse heartfelt notes from people who share a long-standing relationship with us.
To give guests a front-row view to the evolution of fashion in India, design houses including Raw Mango, Abraham & Thakore, Anuradha Vakil, Metaphor, James Ferreira,Savio Jon, Narendra Kumar Ahmed, Sunita Shankar, Tilla, Pella, Chola the label by Sohaya Misra,Roma Narsinghani, Aditi Somaniand Pérohave contributed their version of a Mélange memory. Through this showcase, Ms. Kathiwada aims at starting a fashion dialogue by inviting students from various design schools to learn and understand the fashion movement in India, and the importance of being environmentally conscious.
From celebrating culturally-relevant films, promoting wellness, empowering women and launching young designers, Mélange has stayed true to its name. Ms. Kathiwada believes that it’s easy to be something for everyone and lose one’s sense of identity, but it’s been 25 years that Mélange has been challenging that notion.
