Meryl Streep Campaigning ‘India’s Daughter’ for Oscar

Hollywood legend Meryl Streep indicating it deserves to win an Academy Award a movie banned by Indian govt about the dangerous rape of the young woman on the bus in New Delhi has opened in the United States to praise.

Showing murder and the rape of a medical student in 2012 that started protests, the documentary India’s Daughter has been stuck in debate considering that the Indian government implemented its ban.

But Oscar-winning actress Streep, who introduced the documentary at its US theatrical release in New York City on Wednesday night, said it was worthy of the movie industry’s highest honour.

I’m on the campaign now to get her nominated for best documentary,” said Streep, speaking of the film’s director, Leslee Udwin.

When I first saw [the film] I couldn’t speak afterwards,” Streep added.

The movie will open in US theaters on October 23 nationwide, promoter Christine Merser said. Screenings are also scheduled in a handful of countries from Iceland to China.

Meryl Streep joins Gloria Steinem at NYC screening of India's Daughter.
