A teenage romantic fantasy-living-girl would definitely say it aww sweet movie! And that it surely is, a little bit stupid yet charming, when we see Abhay Gulati (Imran Khan) packing Aalia’s (Deepika) bags or the way he cares for her, the grand caring attitude of Gulati, sometimes he seems more of a father or mother to Aaliya, but the relationship is undoubtedly what any sweet 16 would dream about.
However, the doesn’t seem to be anything new then what we’ve seen in this year, ‘Break Ke Baad’ is the newest addition to the roster of quintessential ‘I Hate Love Stories’, ‘Aisha’, ‘Anjaana Anjaani’, ‘Love Aj Kal’. The only new thing is Imran and Deepika being paired for the first time.
Abhay Gulati and Aaliya Khan, two childhood friends, that grow up to become adult lovers, Abhay, a sensible, caring and confused guy, but no-so-sensible to know what he wants except Aaliya, who is ‘free-as-a-fucking-bird’ non-sense, immature and risk-taker partylicious, who wants a ‘Break’ in her relationship.
The movie starts well, but soon become a test of your patience every passing second, the narrative become very dull break (interval) kay baad. Abhay and Aaliya move frequently between India and Australia, but there is no movement in the story. There are no twists throughout the film and the one big-bang in the end is too good to be true.
The funky conversational dialogues are very relatable but extremely wish there was a bigger dose of lighter moments like Abhay changing his facebook status to ‘it’s complicated’ The music unlike ‘Dil Walay Dulhania lay jay gain’ and ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ is forgettable. Andre Menezes chorepgraphy captures the beauty of Australia effectively.
Imran Khan is perfect for this chocolicious-creamy role and Deepika enthralls you with an earnest act but the chemistry between the two is lacking.
